The Students Behind the Movement
We call ourselves the Lucky 7.
We are just a group black students who met to discuss minority issues on campus, venting to each other about how fed up we were with the institution who has consistently ignored our cries for justice. We were tired of the meetings, tired of the speakers, emails, and overall superficial discussions of diversity and inclusion without any meaningful action toward bettering the lives of African Americans on campus.
We gathered at one of our apartments and started talking––not another superficial talk about diversity, but a talk centered around action. What could we do to bring to light the issues we saw and had to deal with daily on campus? After years of meetings and discussions about black issues on campus, we finally decided to act.
We started off chalking our campus, bringing awareness to the history behind Confederate Heritage Month and the Mississippi State Flag. In response to our chalking, the administration removed our messages and students wrote messages of hate, one of which was "Black Lives Matter is racist". Following this, we organized a forum of African American students on campus giving them the space to express their demands, allowing them to let their voices be heard. Next, we wrote a letter to our president along with a list of demands, sending it to all of the prominent leaders on our campus. Unfortunately, we were ignored again. And after our email account was disabled at the request of certain administration, we are now here. Still acting, still moving forward, and it is our hope that you will join our movement.
Regards,
The Lucky 7
